| CARMEL Pomegranates Take Lead in the Northern Hemisphere. |
 |
Mitzpe Shalem, near the Dead Sea is probably the first cultivation area in the northern hemisphere that has started pomegranate harvest. The 20 hectares of AKO and SHANI varieties (to follow by small quantities of Wonderful), famous for their taste and red colour, are expected to yield 10 tons of sweet pomegranates, exclusively exported by Agrexco.
Those quantities represent the start of a bigger production plan to be ready as an early season project in the next few years – exclusively for Agrexco customers around the world.
Bezalel Madmon, product manager in Agrexco, informed that first shipment will be loaded on CARMEL vessel on July 16th and the next shipment, a week later. "After a short break," he added, "pomegranates from other cultivation areas will join and assure a continuous supply till February 2010 ." 10 million pomegranates will be exported this season by Agrexco, a total of 6500 tons.
